We chat with rosariodawson about the journey to Clerks3, the joys of reuniting with Kevin Smith and the whole View Askew family, and the mind-blowing experience of filming Ahsoka:
In the 16 years that have passed between Clerks II and Clerks III, Rosario Dawson's star has only risen higher and higher. But whether she's busy becoming a fan-favorite character in the Marvel Television universe or bringing a fan-favorite character to life in the Star Wars galaxy, she always has time to return to the View Askewniverse. Thus, her character Becky Scott returns in the threequel so that audiences may know what became of her and Date's child.
Rosario Dawson: Yeah, I think so. I think a lot was different. He had had a previous script that he ended up shelving to do Tusk. And I think this film is really coming out of exactly when it was supposed to, and the storytelling that it was, and thank God he survived his Widowmaker heart attack to make it. Because he hadn't made this film up until now, and so much of what he went through is embedded into the story.
Rosario Dawson: That was a big year. I did Shakespeare in the Park that year. I remember that's what I was doing—with Oscar Isaac, as it was his first project out of Juilliard. And Rene Goldsberry; we were doing Two Gentlemen of Verona, and I was reading the script where I was staying at my friend's place.
Rosario Dawson: I love that it hit with people so much. But that's what I love about Clerks, right? It's really similar to me with Rent, which is just focusing on these protagonists; the people I grew up around, and the everyday experiences I had, but not normally seeing that on the big screen or on stage in any kind of way or amplified the way that it was. It's so incredible how iconic that became, and how unusual.
I remember I interviewed you in 2017 or 2018 at New York Comic Con. You threw out the Ahsoka thing unprompted, and I just love that it came to fruition.
