Sander and Crabb dispatched Cody Caldwell and Seain Cook in two sets Sunday, staking their claim to the first entries in the new-look AVP League.

“I mean, we’re here in America, in Huntington Beach, on a beautiful day,” Sander said, the 32-year-old Huntington Beach native taking a moment to examine his surroundings. “They’re in Portugal. You know? I feel like this is a little bit better.” “They’re probably jealous right now,” Sander said, smirking. “We’re here in beautiful Huntington Beach, they’re grinding in Portugal.”“We qualified, you know?” Sander continued, speaking about the AVP League. “That’s big for us. I don’t really care about those other teams, to be honest.”
And even without the teams in Portugal, a handful of standouts emerged from the men’s bracket at Huntington. Bourne and partner Chaim Schalk, who’d pushed for a year for Olympic contention before recently throwing in the towel, fought valiantly in a gritty semifinal against Caldwell and Cook before falling in three sets.
