Calling trans women “men” reveals not only her lack of respect for fellow human beings, but also who she is as an MP. Politicians are sometimes called “lawmakers” because a key part of their job is to make and defend laws. We have legislation in Britain that protects LGBT people. Yet, Badenoch and her new boss, Sunak, seem to forget this. When asked over the summer if trans women are women, he replied “no”.
My questions, then, for the Prime Minister and his Equalities Minister are: do you tell people who are adopted that their mother is not their mother? That biology is the only thing that matters? And, are you interested in our laws? Because they say that if you obtain a gender recognition certificate – which is no mean feat – you are that sex. To deny that is to deny the law you are there to uphold.

We LGBT people, in particular, are now left in the brace position, because as this Government inevitably fails to protect people from poverty and hunger, it will seize upon scapegoats as a distraction. They’re already doing it. This isn’t a “culture war”; it’s a money and power war. It always was.
