'It was great that he saw that work ethic early coming up,' his high school coach said. ... We're having to coach and try to instill that. Travon already had it and that's a plus to his parents.'
selecting him No. 1 overall in April, Graddick said Walker was the most courteous, humble and hard-working student she's ever met during her time at the school.''During the entire four years when he was here, Travon never got into any trouble — nothing,'' said Graddick, who is retiring when the school year ends.
Asked during last month's rookie minicamp had he bought anything lavish yet, Walker said he wasn't focused on money at this point. What caught the attention of Mickey Thrasher, who has been the Upson-Lee High School radio play-by-play announcer since 1979, was how Walker extended himself after the event ended.
It's a close-knit community where most of the folks know each other. It's peaceful, where front yards appear to extend for miles and there is no rush-hour traffic. But there is a Piggly Wiggly grocery store, a Wal-Mart and several fast food restaurants near downtown. "It's a good thing for the community and for Travon. I've been watching high school football games since I was kid when my dad used to take me. I saw when Travon used to play here on Friday nights. For a lack of a better term, he was a beast. When he hit you, you knew it. It was like a train coming to hit you.
"It says a lot about that kid, a lot about his parents because we can all name at least five knuckleheads, and I say knuckleheads in a good manner, now," Caldwell said."And we can all name some, but if they had been celebrated like the five-star and things like that, they would probably have the attitude that they can be late for class — what is he going to do?
No one could block Walker as a defensive tackle because of his great size, strength and speed. Elder said he had superb hands as a tight end. Parks died in 2020 after complications from a stroke in 2017. When Elder was an assistant on Parks staff in 2016, he said they debated whether to bring up Walker from the freshman team to varsity. He was already 6-foot-5, 250 pounds, and one of the strongest athletes in the school.
In football, despite Walker's dominating presence on both sides of the ball, the most wins he enjoyed in a season in high school were seven during his junior season, when he had 37 solo tackles, three sacks and two forced fumbles. Walker is the first No. 1 overall pick in the NFL who did not make an All-Conference team or be named as an All-American. He never started a game during his first two seasons for the Bulldogs. But Jaguars cornerback Tyson Campbell, a teammate of Walker for two seasons at Georgia, is not surprised about his raise to become the No.1 pick.
"It was always a competition between them in athletics and academics because they were even competing for the highest GPA," Stead said. By 10, Walker was the star on both the traveling basketball team and his recreational league basketball team, and was the best player on his Pop Warner League football.
Walker had been starter on his high school team since his freshman season. Between his sophomore and junior seasons, Upson Lee won 63 consecutive games and they extended the streak to 75 games into Walker's senior season before losing to Lawrenceville's Discovery High School in the championship game of a tournament in Conyers, Ga.
