Methodist bishops in the West will continue ordaining LGBT ministers and create a “safe harbor” where clergy won’t be punished for defying the rules

LOS ANGELES—The sign outside Westwood United Methodist Church just said “Westwood Church” on Sunday. “United Methodist” has been taped over, in protest against the denomination’s vote last week to strengthen its ban on same-sex marriage and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender clergy.

The church’s pastors are exploring options to leave the denomination. But in the meantime, they have pledged to keep hosting same-sex weddings, in defiance of the ban.
