How Steven Klein’s majestic 2006 shot of Carmen Kass, Gisele Bündchen, and their trusty steed brought an unexpected message and reminder of the past to one Vogue writer.

Before I fell in love with fashion, I fell in love with horses. It all started in a freshly cut field one chilly spring day when I won my first blue ribbon. I was six years old and my focus was equitation. I was judged on my position, ability to ride correctly, and overall style, not by speed as in show jumping or racing.
I’ll admit the competition wasn’t stiff back then; there were only two other girls and their pony mounts in the running for the coveted blue ribbon. But the smaller field meant the judge had more time to spend on each rider. Instead of coaching me to put my heels down or sit up straight before I entered the show ring, my trainer simply reminded me to smile. The second my toothy grin appeared, my nerves and fear slipped away.
I don’t think about this moment often. In fact, I hadn’t thought about this lucky day—or the many years I spent competing around the country—until I moved back home with my family amid the coronavirus crisis. My new work from home office, aka my childhood bedroom, is still stuffed with memories and memorabilia from my equestrian days.
