The new The Ones Who Live footage aired at NYCC, however, all but confirms that Rick has indeed been performing undead culling duties for the CRM.
Rick's CRM Job Makes His Walking Dead Spinoff Story Even More Mysterious As shown in The Walking Dead: World Beyond, culling zombies is deemed a menial, low-ranking task within the CRM. The work is usually given to teenagers, like Silas' group, and treated as either a punishment task, or a first step on the military ladder. That doesn't quite fit with the special status Rick Grimes clearly holds at the CRM.
