Richard Linklater recalls a childhood in space race-era Houston in his new Austin-made animation.
, he felt that he'd gone as far as he could with that look,"and the demands of something like this and our environment were such that it needed top-shelf professional animators and compositors."
After almost a decade of development, the filmmaking process was incredibly speedy – by animated standards. The average big studio animated feature takes years:came in on a 20-day shoot and 21 months of animation, with only a two-month delay from the original delivery date due to COVID affecting the process. That's not a one-off for Pallotta but going in the deadlines seemed insane, especially since filming was scheduled to begin in February 2020.
Linklater added,"I remember telling Bruce Curtis, our production designer, 'Good news, bad news. We just have to design the world. There won't be set construction. The bad news? We shoot in six weeks.'"
