U.S. Navy explosive experts detonated the WWII-era explosive a mile off of Rhode Island's coastline.

Navy EOD responded to a request from the U.S. Coast Guard to identify and render safe unexplored ordnancA spokesperson for the Navy said on Thursday that Navy Explosive Ordinance Disposal Mobile Unit 12 out of Newport, Rhode Island responded and took possession of explosive, identified as a World War II MK6 depth charge.

"The safety of people and the environment are our top priority in these situations," the spokesperson said. "For that reason, the U.S. Navy coordinated detonation with the State of Rhode Island department of Environmental Management and NOAA to ensure the safety of people and the surrounding environment, including the wildlife."According to the Navy spokesperson, the area the fishing vessel was trolling their nets was the site of a WWII battle.
