However, based on his findings, he says “it seems likely that the average rhino horn has shrunk by at least 10 per cent in the past 150 years” by looking at how proportions of body and horn size have changed over the years.The researchers suggest that “One big concern is that if individual rhinos have smaller horns, then to match the current demand from markets, more rhinos will have to be killed.”
He added: “While we can’t take exact measurements from the photos, we can look at how long the horn is compared to other parts of the body. When we do that, we can see that over time there are fewer rhinos with a really large horn compared to the average across the dataset and more rhinos with a smaller horn compared to the average.”
