OSTARA Project wins over a packed NAC Fourth Stage
As the group’s bassist and co-leader, Jodi Proznick, recently told her hometown newspaper, the Vancouver Sun, the OSTARA Project convened less than year ago with contemporary social considerations top of mind. “After a lot of serious discussions over the past five years about equity, diversity and inclusion and other things, everything coalesced into a weekend where we came together, made a record, played some shows and captured it all in a documentary,” Proznick said.
While Proznick did most of the announcing, and Biali’s natural star power could not help but make her an incandescent focal point, the band showed itself to be a democratic enterprise as it tackled compositions from each of its members. The result was a program of considerable stylistic breadth that found its through lines in the personalities and musical strengths of its players rather than from the many dots on the pages.
On these and other tunes, musicians revealed themselves as thoughtful, distinctive soloists. Tosoff and Au were nimble, assured and always musical. Therrien was a surging, punchy presence.
