🎬 FilmReview The Deepest Breath is an anxious and tragic sports documentary. | ✍️ Maxwell Rabb

as one of the most anxiety-inducing extreme sports documentaries ever. Like free solo climbing, free diving pushes the limits of extreme sports to unimaginable extents, rendering competitions deadly even for the most skilled. The free divers plunge into the ocean depths on a single breath, equipped with a wetsuit and nose plugs and pushed exclusively by remarkable adrenaline. In short, it’s not for everyone.

Laura McGann’s absorbing documentary explores the free diving world, homing in on Italian free diver Alessia Zecchini as she prepares to break the world record at the 2017 Vertical Blue free diving competition. Zecchini embodies a rare, unexplainable drive that would enthrall the most passive viewer. Since childhood, she trained with men’s team divers, breaking records repeatedly. She idolizes Natalia Molchanova, the Russian champion free diver who disappeared near Ibiza in 2015.

For Zecchini, the psychological hurdles finally threaten her momentum at the 2017 competition. She overcomes the anxieties with the help of Stephen Keenan, a charming Irish safety diver famous for saving Molchanova’s son from 30 meters below the surface. But Keenan never appears onscreen. The first time the documentary mentions Keenan, it doesn’t sugarcoat the melancholic backdrop of this documentary.
