Lisa Loomer's rewrite of her 2016 play deepens an already gripping narrative

Lisa Loomer’s play “Roe” premiered in 2016 in a country where abortion was still safe and legal, at least as codified by the Supreme Court. That is no longer the case, and “Roe,” now running at Stages, is no longer the same play. The welcome emphasis on every character’s humanity is still the main ingredient, but Loomer did some rewrites in the wake of last year’s Supreme Court decision overturning its Roe v. Wade decision. The show is now more urgent and polemical.

“Roe” is largely the story of how Norma McCorvey , a young, deeply flawed Dallas woman, was turned into a symbol and an ideological weapon by those on both sides of the abortion debate. It is, in this sense, a tragedy, and a plea to rediscover a woman who was literally turned into a Jane Roe. Petite, foul-mouthed and openly gay , raised by an alcoholic narcissist of a mother , Zimmerman’s McCorvey is a blue-collar woman who gets caught up in the biggest legal case of her time.
