Review: Playwright's semi-autobigraphical tale lacking the drama of his followup, Rent yyc
After Larson’s death, playwright David Auburn turned Tick, Tick…Boom! into a three-person musical with the added performers playing Jonathan’s girlfriend Susan, his best friend Michael, Jonathan’s parents, his agent and Karessa, a girl workshopping Superbia, a musical that Jonathan was writing.
Michael and Jonathan have been friends since they were children and were roommates until Michael gave up his dream of becoming an actor and went into marketing. He’s moving out and up in every sense. He has a high-rise apartment and a BMW and wants Jonathan to come with him to Madison Avenue and the high life. Joel Schaefer nails Michael’s songs but he doesn’t sell the corporate image.
The songs in Tick, Tick…Boom! range from pop and rock to Broadway pastiche. Therapy is a great little Sondheim-style number and director Thibodeau pulls out all the stops to make it zing. Thibodeau dresses up most of the numbers to keep them from becoming static.
