If the movie’s point is that people are all pretty much the same and that superficial differences don’t matter, the makers of “Elemental” chose the wrong metaphor to make that argument.
In fact, all the elements present a physical threat to each other. Fire can consume air and create heat that causes water to evaporate. Water douses fire, etc. The movie seems to want to say that white, Black, brown and Asian people can live among and with each other in goodwill and benefit from each other’s cultures, perspectives and shared values. These are impeachable sentiments. But then again, white, Black, brown and Asian people don’t set each other on fire just by shaking hands.
