Meg 2: The Trench is a clumsy action movie with the occasional spurt of fun monster conflict amidst a sea of flat characters and a tiresome plot of corporate espionage. | ✍️ myleyantay

opens in the Cretaceous period, when a small bug is eaten by a bigger bug, which is then eaten by a small lizard, then a big lizard, then a T. rex, then a Megalodon, closing the food chain as the apex predator.attempts to bite off its 2018 predecessor by going bigger in every way, but rarely for the better. It’s a clumsy action movie with the occasional spurt of fun monster conflict amidst a sea of flat characters and a tiresome plot of corporate espionage.

Not only are there more Megs this time, but each Meg is larger than the last, and they’re joined by miniature, equally hungry amphibians and even hungrier capitalists. And somehow the scrappy amphibians have more personality than the paper-thin human villains or their heroic counterparts. The Meg-hunting hero, Jonas , can be summed up entirely as gruff, and he never evolves beyond that. His daughter Meiying is mostly cliche as the precocious risk-taking teenager.

The sequel opens with some janky CGI prehistoric fish fighting to the death, and after that, it doesn’t exactly tone down.
