Review: Luminous Voices, and orchestra, excel with difficult task of J.S. Bach's Mass in B minor yycmusic
One can hardly overstate how difficult it is to deliver the trumpet parts in this work with the poise and accuracy displayed on this occasion. This was matched with the remarkably expressive playing of the Baroque flute by Soile Stratkauskas, notably in the Benedictus.
One sometimes wonders how this choir can produce such precise, eloquent singing, and so consistently. Something of an answer was on display at this performance, more evidently perhaps than in a purely choral context. As with a hockey team, having first-class players really helps. So too with a choir. And in this occasion, one could gauge the vocal depth of the choir in the frequently overlooked alto section.
The wonderful Laudamus te was sung by Sara Staples with her customary elan and conviction, with Patricia Thompson, also with generous voice, the soloist in the Qui sedes and joining Lauren Woods in the charming Et in unum Dominum. Lauren Woods, from the soprano section, sang all the soprano solos, filling in for Hannah Pagenkopf who was originally scheduled. With her expressive, rich voice and sure manner of singing, she delivered everything that was needed and more.
Zach Finkelstein sang the tenor solos, including the celebrated Benedictus, usually quite iffy in most performances. With a voice perfectly suited to this music, all the difficulties seemed to vanish in the mellifluous, easy eloquence of his singing. It is not hard to see why he is much sought-after in the early music world as a tenor.
