Review: Heard of AOC? The other three women in this political documentary are just as interesting.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, center, is the main focus of the Netflix documentary “Knock Down the House,” which also looks at the 2018 campaigns of Amy Vilela, Cori Bush and Paula Jean Swearingen. The Netflix documentary, which is also being released in select theaters, follows four Democratic women who challenged incumbents from their own party to bring about a more liberal agenda: Amy Vilela in Nevada’s 4th Congressional District; Cori Bush, who took on Rep. William Lacy Clay , a member of a St. Louis political dynasty; and Paula Jean Swearengin, who ran for U.S. Senate against West Virginia incumbent Joe Manchin III.
The documentary “Knock Down the House” follows the 2018 campaigns of several female candidates, including Cori Bush of Missouri. Luckily, that show isn’t a bad one. Lears uses home movies to give viewers a sense of Ocasio-Cortez’s early life and adolescence, and she’s particularly gifted at making the correlation between Ocasio-Cortez’s political drive and the loss of her father when she was 19. It’s a great campaign story as well.
