'From the Mississippi Delta' takes place in the deep South and Minnesota, but Chicago is name-checked in the opening lines. The autobiographical play is now running at Lifeline Theatre in a co-production with Pegasus Theatre Chicago.

In Lifeline and Pegasus Theatre’s revival, ILesa Duncan directs a three-person cast that includes LaKecia Harris, Arielle Leverett and Jenise Sheppard, who rotate through multiple characters. Their heartfelt, often funny performances draw one into Holland’s story but don’t quite make up for the pacing issues in the writing.

From the start, music plays an important role in this song-filled play, and Ricky Harris’ music direction merits a nod. All three actors have rich voices that fill the small theater with the sounds of African American spirituals and civil rights anthems.
