'Final Fantasy VII Remake' is an ambitious revisiting of one of the most beloved titles in video game history.

As a big fan of the franchise, the original FF7 ranks high in my list of favorite Final Fantasy games. Final Fantasy VI remains my all-time favorite, the pinnacle of the series’ classic sprite-based approach. Final Fantasy VII, however, was also a 10 for me and supplanted Final Fantasy IV as my second-favorite game of the mainline titles.

To Square Enix’s credit, the first chapter of the game was just about the best response one could have to allay many of the concerns that people had. The first bombing run of Shinra’s Mako Reactor 1 and the ensuing escape from Midgar are examples of Final Fantasy VII Remake at its absolute best – an excellent mix of the pomp of impressive presentation joined with the circumstance of rock-solid gameplay.

The real-time action feels especially on point. While the hybrid action in previous Final Fantasy games or even the recent Kingdom Hearts felt floaty or laggy, Final Fantasy VII Remake’s combat is quite responsive – just like an action game. You don’t get as much of that sense that the real-time and classic RPG elements are fighting with each other. Instead, they complement each other really well and make for a satisfying fighting experience.

Weapons can also be upgraded to grant its user buffs such as increased HP, attack, defense, critical rate and more. Upgrades can also include additional slots for materia, which are special orbs that allow you to use spells or specific skills that are associated with them. Most materia also can be leveled up multiple times, unlocking more powerful spells and abilities such as upgraded healing or more powerful elemental attacks.
