He gives an Oscar-worthy person as a 600-pound man in the last days of his life.

This image released by A24 shows Brendan Fraser in a scene from"The Whale." Before we see Brendan Fraser in “The Whale” , we hear him. He’s playing an English teacher conducting a class online, and the quality of his voice gives us the character. He’s gentle. He’s careful. He’s passionate, but he’s conserving his energy. He might be ill. He’s most certainly a good teacher.

So, to some extent, Fraser is aided by the suit, but for the most part, it presents a challenge. Fraser has the acting task of carrying a movie with his body and part of his face encased in rubber. It’s like going into a fight with one hand and a couple of fingers unavailable. Onscreen, Fraser plays a man who’s physically enormous, but, unable to move, the actor is forced to give a minimalist performance — it’s an absolute triumph.

In recent years, Fraser revealed that he was a victim of sexual harassment, and that that put him off filmmaking for a decade. So Hollywood has seemingly done everything to suppress Fraser’s talent, but it finally and gloriously emerges nonetheless with this film.
