It took seven years, but the restoration of the Nancy Kimball cobblestone house at 302 W. Chicago St. is now complete and will be celebrated Saturday with an open house and ribbon-cutting.
The city of Elgin bought the property in 2009, gutted it and designated it a city landmark. It wasn’t until 2015 that city and museum officials started talking about rehabbing the house, with construction starting in 2016, Marston said. At the time it was built, cobblestone was a cheaper building material than brick but just as strong and easier to install, Marston said. There were between 1,000 and 1,200 cobblestone homes built in North America, mostly in New York State, where the Kimball family originated.
In many ways, the Nancy Kimball cobblestone house in Elgin was rebuilt as much as restored, officials say. It was a massive undertaking that took seven years and hundreds of volunteer hours -- as well as the expertise of John Crowe and BAC Restoration -- to complete.
