The new festival had proved controversial after local tourism operators raised concerns about holding the new music festival one week after the Cavendish Beach Music Festival. Many cottage, hotel and bed and breakfast operators, who had already made bookings that weekend prior to the approval of the festival, said the festival would disrupt family vacationers in the area.
The vote approving a permit for the festival, which was held during a special meeting on March 1, followed a close vote on February 27 by council that appeared to deny a permit for the Sommo Festival. Three councillors had voted to accept the recommendations of the municipality’s planning board to deny a permit for the new festival, based partly on concerns from local residents.
That reconsideration vote, held on March 1, came to a different conclusion. Council voted 3-2 to not accept recommendations put forward by the municipality’s planning board.
