State regulators will conduct a hearing in May on the plant, which could pump 1 million of treated wastewater per day into Helotes Creek.

Nathan Glavy, technical director for the Great Edwards Aquifer Alliance, speaks during a Wednesday news conference to oppose the Guajolote Ranch project, which calls for 2,900 homes and a wastewater treatment plant that could release 1 million gallons per day into the creek.

Opposition bubbled up shortly after Lennar announced plans for the project. The Guajolote Ranch site is over the Edwards Aquifer contributing zone, which environmental experts consider a vulnerable segment of the aquifer. Effluent from the facility would flow into Helotes Creek, ultimately mixing with Culebra Creek and the Lower Leon Creek, and running down into the Edwards Aquifer.

Ahead of the May 9 hearing, opponents on Wednesday held a news conference at a nearby community to reiterate their concerns about the project.
