The nearly 50 residents of Heritage Manor Retirement Home in Cornwall have been told they’ll need to find a new place to live.
Dean Rushlow, the owner of the facility at 1545 Vincent Massey Dr., in a letter to residents and families, said the aging building needs a complete overhaul, that it’ll be demolished in November and that residents will need to move out no later than Oct. 25.“It is with great sadness that we announce the impending closing ,” Rushlow wrote in the letter dated July 27.
“It was a bombshell, it was a shock to a lot of people,” said the five-year resident of the facility. “Now I’m going to have to find another place to live.” Towell said the biggest issue in relocating will be finding subsidized housing that’s wheelchair-friendly. Towell, who has a broken back from a collision decades ago and who suffers from advanced COPD, said he did visit with Cornwall housing officials and was, like many other manor residents, presented with a list of potential locations for accommodation that are subsidized.

Just a bit further west, at 1755 Vincent Massey Dr., sits Heritage Heights Retirement Home, and the newly-opened Heritage Suites Senior Residence, with owners Corry and Dean Rushlow celebrating a grand opening just over a month ago. “There are a lot of residents in there who are confused – they don’t know where they’ll be going,” Dupuis said. “And with the impact that we already have in senior’s residences, I can understand their fear. Most of them are confused and lost.”
