With the Padres, former Mets reliever Seth Lugo could get a chance to start again; he will reportedly sign a two-year, $15 million deal with San Diego
Right-hander Seth Lugo and the club have agreed to two-year, $15 million deal, according to multiple reports. The Padres have not confirmed the deal.
Lugo, 33, has not started a game since 2020 but had reportedly favored a return to the rotation upon reaching free agency, and the Padres are looking for arms after losing Sean Manaea and Mike Clevinger to the open market. Like Nick Martinez, who agreed to a reunion last month, Lugo could make a seamless transition to the bullpen at any point.
Lugo has a 3.48 ERA over parts of seven years in the majors, all with the Mets. He went 3-2 with a 3.60 ERA, 69 strikeouts and a 1.17 WHIP last year out of the bullpen. Both he and Martinez are the favorites to lock down spots in the rotation behind Yu Darvish, Blake Snell and Joe Musgrove. Other options for the rotation include Adrián Morejón — although he threw just 47 1/3 innings last year coming off Tommy John surgery and has never thrown more 65 innings in a season — minor league signee Julio Teheran and minor leaguers Jay Groome, Reiss Knehr and Ryan Weathers.
