The University of Utah gymnastics program is currently under investigation.

Tom Farden speaks to Utah gymnasts during a meet at the Huntsman Center. The U. has hired an independent investigator to review Farden's treatment of gymnasts. The findings of the report are expected in the coming weeks. The University of Utah has ordered an investigation into its gymnastics program and head coach Tom Farden.

“The well-being and safety of our student-athletes is of the utmost importance to the University of Utah and our Athletics Department,” Nelson said in a statement. “The University is committed to ensuring our student-athletes feel respected, supported and safe. This includes providing our student-athletes with access to campus and community resources as needed, whatever the situation.”

They accused Farden of creating a “toxic” environment in which he verbally degraded gymnasts, pressured gymnasts not to communicate with their families, expected gymnasts to perform despite being injured or suffering from mental health issues, throwing objects around the gym or at gymnasts themselves, and rewarding and encouraging gymnasts to report on teammates’ lives on and off the mat.

Two former gymnasts — Sydney Soloski and Alexia Burch — defended Farden, as did former coaches Greg and Megan Marsden.“I’ve had the absolute privilege of being coached by, working with, and now supported by Tom for the last 13 years,” Lofgren wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “My experiences with Tom have been nothing but positive. He’s an incredible person with an incredible passion and dedication for the sport but more importantly, for the athletes.
