Obviously, we are not out of the era of massive video game acquisitions and consolidation yet, and one new rumor is something that many fans have theorized about for quite some time, that Sony may be looking t buy Japan’s Square Enix for the PlayStation brand.
This report comes from the PS I Love You show, where Greg Miller says he’s heard that Sony is trying to acquire Square Enix, though it’s unclear what stage of that process may be happening and whether or not it will actually come to pass, and he says to take it with a grain of salt.
Square Enix was in the news this past week after selling Eidos, Crystal Dynamics and a bunch of IPs like Deus Ex, Tomb Raider and Thief to Embracer Group. Now the theory is that the company is “slimming down” to potentially be a more attractive acquisition target. There’s a long-running connection between Square Enix and PlayStation as the two companies have collaborated on releases many, many times in the past. The idea behind an acquisition is that perhaps Sony could make something like Final Fantasy a PlayStation exclusive series once and for all. Though in the wake of their purchase of Bungie, who knows, as that deal did not require Bungie’s only game franchise, Destiny, to become the exclusive property of PlayStation.
