San Francisco County had 500 times more Uber and Lyft rides per square mile than any other part of the state.

— was that it would alleviate traffic. The logic went something like this: Drivers who would otherwise congest roads with their own vehicles could carpool together, reducing road congestion in the process.shows the extent to which San Franciscans are reliant on these services to navigate the city — and how that promise to ease traffic has held up.

Based on data from September 2019 to August 2020 — a relatively even split of pre-pandemic and pandemic-era lockdowns — the report found that San Francisco has the greatest concentration of Uber and Lyft trips than any other California county, with over 500 times more rides per square mile than any other part of the state.

Two-thirds of all rides by number in the state of California are called in its two most populous counties — Los Angeles and San Diego — and San Francisco. San Francisco’s Uber and Lyft use is especially notable; despite having a quarter of San Diego County’s population, San Francisco County had nearly twice as many rides.

These rides are primarily concentrated within San Francisco’s downtown, the report finds, and peaked between 4 and 8 p.m., further putting a strain on already-packed streets. “Within San Francisco,” the report notes, “trips are further concentrated within the downtown core on the city’s most congested streets where the city prioritizes sustainable, space-efficient modes of travel, such as transit, bicycling and walking.

About 31 million rides — 14% of all rides hailed in California between September 2019 and August 2020 — were requested to be shared UberPool or Lyft Shared rides. Of those, just more than half were actually shared pool trips.
