Padres General Manager A.J. Preller previously said Bob Melvin is 'under contract; he's our manager'
Less than three weeks after Padres President of Baseball Operations A.J. Preller said Bob Melvin is “our manager,” the San Francisco Giants have received permission to interview Melvin for their managerial opening, The Athletic has reported. This development seemingly thrusts the 61-year-old Melvin toward the top of the known candidates to replace the fired Gabe Kapler.
Melvin did not join Preller on the end-of-season video conference call but told the Union-Tribune the next day that “I’m very much looking forward to next year.” Preller and Melvin met after the season to address issues that, according to multiple people within the organization, led to the two men clashing over the past two seasons. Amid an 82-80 season in which a team with a $256 million roster missed the playoffs, tensions escalated over communication and roster construction.
