Miller is introducing legislation that would dock Congress members’ pay and restrict their campaigning during government shutdowns.

The Rocky River Republican’s “No Work, No Play Act of 2023″ would also restrict members of Congress from taking advantage of official travel during government shutdowns, except for travelling between their districts and Washington, D.C.

Without enacting funding bills, federal agencies must stop all non-essential work. Workers who are deemed essential, like air traffic controllers and Transportation Security Administration workers, stay on the job but aren’t paid while the shutdown lasts. Workers who get furloughed because of a shutdown are required to get back pay when the shutdown ends.

“It’s just inexcusable,” said Brown “Customs agents will have to work without pay. Food safety inspections could be delayed. It really makes no sense because it’s just a ... bunch of politicians trying to score political points when they’re hurting our state.” U.S. Rep. Emilia Sykes, an Akron Democrat, last week joined Warrensville Heights Democratic Rep. Shontel Brown in introducing legislation called the “Feed Our Families During a Shutdown Act,” which would ensure thatrecipients could access their benefits up to three months after a government shutdown occurs.

Sammy Miller: We’re teaching music to kids all wrongSammy Miller: We’re teaching music to kids all wrongEach fall, as school starts up again, music educators witness a familiar ritual: Eager first-time students squeak on a clarinet, suppress giggles at the noises coming from the tubas and zealously hit a bass drum a little too hard. It’s a moment characterized by excitement, enthusiasm and the anticipation of new beginnings — which is why it’s so disheartening to know that many of those kids will eventually quit their instruments.
