Porter’s win means incumbents held every House seat in Orange County in 2022.
Porter had been locked in a tight battle for California’s 47th congressional district with former state Assemblymember Scott Baugh, a Republican, this election cycle. She had consistently led Baugh throughout the lengthy vote-counting process, and in recent days her lead has increased.
“Nobody wins elections alone. Tonight’s results wouldn’t have been possible without the hundreds of grassroots supporters who knocked doors, made calls, and helped turn people out to our events,” Porter said. “I’m proud of the work we did together, and the work our team will continue to do in Congress to put Orange County families first.”
The coastal CA-47, which tilts slightly in favor of Democrats, includes Irvine, Laguna Beach, Newport Beach and part of Huntington Beach. It was earmarked this cycle by national Republicans as a potential pickup for their party.Porter is a former UC Irvine law professor who has become a leading Democratic voice in the House since she was first elected in 2018. In Congress, she sits on the Natural Resources and Oversight and Reform committees and she’s a member of a bevy of caucuses.
She pointed to high costs of living — from housing to health care to child care to education — when asked about the most significant concerns among her constituents. “I’ve pushed to reduce these expenses, for example allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices and making child care affordable for all,” Porter said in response to a Register questionnaire.to combat inflation and cut the rising cost of prescription drugs. Appearing alongside him was Porter, who the president heaped praise upon throughout his address.
