A new plan to allow landlords to evict tenants for antisocial behaviour within two weeks could lead to domestic abuse survivors suddenly losing their homes, housing experts have warned

are disproportionately reported as antisocial behaviour and that mental health is an issue behind some of these issues too – and that to deal with that you need better support for the people concerned, not taking their homes away.”

“The Government will need to think carefully about what behaviour is deemed an ‘annoyance’ and provide clear guidance to landlords to ensure survivors are protected from homelessness,” he added. One of the main proposals in the Bill is the ending of Section 21 eviction, which allow landlords to evict tenants without giving a reason.

Polly Neate, chief executive at Shelter, said it was important that new “loopholes for unfair evictions” are not opened up after Section 21 is abolished.
