The Renault Megane E-Tech's displays form part of the company's new OpenR Link interface
Megane E-Tech is an important car for the French automaker and is equipped with a host of new technologies not found in other Renault products.that Renault is particularly proud of is the OpenR Link interface, consisting of two large screens designed to work in a similar way to a smartphone. The first screen is a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster while connected to it is a 12-inch vertical infotainment display.
Like some other automakers, Renault has opted not to extend the dashboard over the gauges to shield them from the sun, noting that the screen has an anti-reflective coating and also features the same micro-blinds technology as used in the privacy screen features of some computers. The OpenR’s panels also adjust their brightness depending on outdoor light levels.
The screens run on the Android operating system and offer both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. The use of the Android OS also means that Google Maps is natively installed. Powering the displays is the latest Snapdragon Automotive Cockpit platform from Qualcomm, making the screen seven times smoother than Renault’s outgoing system. LG Electronics was also called upon to ensure the two screens work seamlessly together.
