The honourary life member of the Canadian Pony Club said she had only been in Nova Scotia for three years when the contest was held. But she remembers it well. She was working at Edgehill School for Girls, which is where the pony was housed for the duration of the contest. The girls at Edgehill “got attached, as children do, and when the raffle went and the little boy won, the family knew nothing about horses so our parents all got together and paid $25 each and bought him from them,” explained Henry, noting 12 local families chipped in for the pony.

Hughes said she knew there was something special about Dandy Bonanza before he was raffled. Her father, Jim Wilcox, was one of the parents who chipped in to purchase the pony. She estimates she rode Dandy Bonanza for two to three years. She said she’s thankful for Henry’s guidance all those years ago.

Henry retired from instructing within the last couple of years, but her love of the sport carries on, as evidenced by her latest research project.
