The case involves relatives who have all suffered terrible losses but lays bare two alternate paths for seeking recompense from Iran.
Kourosh Doustshenas, the organization’s spokesman, said he would not comment on the case “out of respect for the legal process and the desire to protect its integrity.” Alireza Ghandchi, a Toronto-area resident whose wife and two children were killed in the crash, said he quit the association a week ago, concerned it was putting too much effort into political opposition to the Iranian regime, rather than specifically obtaining justice for the crash victims.
Flight PS752 was brought down by two anti-aircraft missiles over Tehran three years ago, amid rising tensions between Iran and the United States. Iranian authorities at first denied the plane had been shot down, then said it was an awful mistake, the missile crew mistaking the civilian plane for a cruise missile.Article content
The plaintiffs must also find a way to recover the damages awarded them. Another judge recently upheld the federal government’s decision to block them from seizing Iran’s Ottawa embassy and related assets, which have been empty since the countries severed diplomatic relations in 2012.
