“Launching an idea and growing a business require different skill sets,” shares Merson. “I am learning how to run a business, and it’s humbling in the best and most entertaining of ways most days.”

Since its launch in 2016, Reina Rebelde has found its home on shelves in stores like Target and day by day grown its online community into active ambassadors for the beauty products and the mission behind them.

“[When I first started], it was inspired by…my personal frustration with deficiencies in what I was being offered as a Latina in this space from both a product perspective and a messaging perspective,” shares Merson. “Beauty is a very culturally rich, nuanced and important ritual in any Latina’s life and nothing was really resonating quite right…Reina Rebelde was the first brand in this space that was created authentically for our community and offered prestige quality products.

Merson started her career as a lawyer, but she admits that it’s been this current iteration of her career as an entrepreneur that has taught her more lessons about continual growth and never-ending gray areas.Much of the time, there is no right answer,” shares Merson. “I always thought the biggest, toughest decision I was going to make was starting the business, and then, there would be a succession of pretty clear, relatively easy decisions I would have to make.

Real startups versus the social media version of the same. The world at large is suffering from this delusion, and startups are no different. There is only one road through this experience and that is hard and consistent work. The behind the scenes can be really off-putting, if not unglamorous. It’s easier to hold onto the fantasy of how sexy it can be, the “fake it ‘til you make it” approach.
