Some of the social news site’s largest subreddits went offline to protest changes that will threaten third-party apps.

Thousands of Reddit communities or pages, known as subreddits, are going dark this week to protest the site’s decision to monetize access to its data, a change that could kill off many third-party apps, users warn.

“Over six thousand subreddits with a combined reach of hundreds of millions of users have elected to ‘go dark’ in protest,” a moderator explained in the subreddit r/Save3rdPartyApps. “This isn’t something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love due to the poor moderation tools available through the official app.

Currently, Reddit offers free access to its API. However, under the new terms, which take effect July 1, third-party apps that require more than 100 API queries per minute will be charged $0.24 for every 1,000 requests. Many applications that fall below that threshold — the vast majority of apps, according to Reddit’s CEO and co-founder Steve Huffman — can continue to access the API for free., Huffman justified the change, arguing it is only fair for these third-party developers to pay up.

Users, however, have argued the new charges threaten these popular third-party apps and could limit accessibility, effectively forcing users to use the official Reddit app, which they say is less user-friendly and lacks accommodations for visually-impaired people.
