She simply asks: “Can they not tout it as the best until they iron out these things? There are some very basic fundamental glitches that still need to be dealt with.”“Something needs to change where they’re allowed greater freedom within a locked down facility,” she said. “They feel trapped.”
People admitted to the facility go through an assessment and stabilization program which can last up to three months and takes place in a more secure section of the building. A Coquitlam RCMP spokesperson said officers responded to 39 reports of people missing from Red Fish Healing Centre in January and 22 in February. Howell said when her son was admitted after a months-long wait, doctors discussed a treatment plan of six to nine months. However, his frequent disappearances put that plan in jeopardy, Howell said, so the family has now been talking to staff about plans to safely discharge him next week.
“You’re going to have those kinds of situations any time you have a large number of people with very serious mental illnesses that are not responsive to treatment,” McIntosh said. “So you’re never going to erase that challenge.” Jonny Morris, CEO of the B.C. branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association, said mental health staff need to carefully balance a person’s dignity, autonomy and human rights with their safety and risk of self-harm.Article content
