The head of the Sheriff's Office's traffic homicide unit said a combination of people not wearing seat belts, plus alcohol and drug involvement, distraction and speed seemed to be fueling 2021's dramatic rise.
In a Feb. 1 statement, Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety President Cathy Chase said the first nine months of 2021 saw 31,720 people killed in motor vehicle crashes nationwide. Chase said that was the highest during the first nine months of any year since 2006. It was also the largest percentage increase during the first nine months in the history of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Fatality Analysis Reporting System.
