Do you remember when it was fun to stay at this building?
The YMCA is one of the best-known buildings in Watford but the organisation has been situated in a number of different locations during its time in the town.is delighted to share pictures from the Watford Museum archive and this week we recall when the charity was based in Clarendon Road.
The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “The first recorded meetings of the YMCA in Watford were in 1886. The organisation met as several locations over the years, including in rooms of the YWCA at 101 High Street .“In 1948, they bought Apsley Lodge in Clarendon Road. Eventually they outgrew the building so Apsley Lodge was demolished and in 1962, a new YMCA building was opened at the rear of this plot offering more accommodation and facilities.
