He simply suggested he didn’t handle it in the most professional manner and he would learn from that.So, in that vein, we are going to assume that the message he sent out Wednesday night remains the message he wanted sent out.
VanVleet believes at the root of the increasing rift between players and some officials this year is the expanded mandate the league has given officials this year to call techs. He got one himself earlier this year — yes, courtesy of Taylor — for bouncing the ball off the stanchion. It’s as stupid now as it was when it happened.
He knew full well as soon as he started talking about officials in the way in which he did Wednesday night in Los Angeles that he was going to take a fine for it and he decided whatever punishment the league handed out would be worth it. It’s a calculated move to force the league to address the fact that the current dynamic between players and officials isn’t good for anyone.
Again, and VanVleet made sure to point this out as well, he was not talking about the majority or even many officials.In Boston on Thursday, Marcus Smart, a guy who VanVleet goes to war with four times a season, was very happy to sign off on his opponent’s message.
