A police standoff with a rape suspect continued into early Wednesday morning in Pleasant Hill, just across from the Sunvalley Mall in Concord, although police believe the man might have long left with customers hours ago.
A police captain told KTVU that the man, wanted for alleged rape in another city, could have left the area late Tuesday night but SWAT teams were still continuing to search for him in the crawl space of Nordstrom Rack anyway, as some witnesses had seen him go in there at some point. Police Department sent an alert late Tuesday for the public to avoid the area of Nordstrom Rack and Safeway.
Concord police reported the suspect ran into the Nordstrom Rack, and has been holed up for several hours. It is not clear why authorities were chasing after the man in the first place. Video of the scene showed store employees evacuating, and law enforcement wearing body shields and guns drawn at the front door of Nordstrom Rack. Other law enforcement agencies were also at the scene, including Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department.
