Baker Mayfield is likely to start against the Packers on Monday night, coach Sean McVay indicated to reporters on Tuesday. Rams QB John Wolford — last week’s starter — is “probably” out Week 15 with a neck injury, per McVay.
Mayfield did not start for the Rams in Week 14 but came in after the opening series, finishing 22-of-35 for 230 yards and one touchdown in the victory.
“I think you still take it a day at a time,” McVay said of Mayfield. “I think the important thing is…making sure things are learned in bite-sized increments, and then you build off of that.” If Wolford’s status doesn’t improve by Monday, McVay added that the Rams would only activate two quarterbacks: Mayfield and third-string quarterbackFourth-quarter heroics of Week 14 aside, the Rams’ coaching staff is looking at this experiment with Mayfield as though that abnormal week was an outlier, and they’re still seeking an understanding of the mean.
“I think you just take it a day at a time. You don’t want to get too far ahead of yourself,” said McVay on Friday. “I think we’ll just at least have a little bit more normalcy to a weekly rhythm. You still don’t want to be naïve to the fact that there’s a lot of things that we’ve got to continue to try to be able to build on.”
What does Mayfield’s daily standard workflow look like on a day-to-day basis? And, can the team get consistent enough play from him to truly ascertain where other young players’ development is/where it needs to go? These are the top two questions the Rams need to answer with Mayfield now and they’ll get a real shot to do it over the next four games. —
