The first two months of the NFL’s offseason turn into something resembling a big-top circus caravan.

Much of the league sets up shop for at the Super Bowl in mid-February. Then everybody descends on Indianapolis for the NFL Scouting Combine. The last major leg of the tour — aside from smaller offshoots like pro days and the personnel who attend the draft — is the spring ownership meetings.

New Arizona head coach Jonathan Gannon speaking just down the road from his team’s facility? Big crowd. New York Jets coach Robert Saleh one day and Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur the next for the latest on Aaron Rodgers’ offseason of drama? Them, too. But Payton’s return drew its full share of eyeballs.

“I’ve done this a long time, and I know a lot of the people, the coaches and a lot of the owners — not just our own ownership group, but many of the other owners — some of which I’ve worked for and some I’ve just known for 16 years as a head coach and 22 years total,” he said. “It’s good to be back and see everyone. It’s not the circus, but it’s the same group of people you see at the Combine for the most part, a little bit different. … It’s good to see those people.

“’s always been great to me,” McVay said. “I was sitting there yesterday with he and Mike Tomlin and I can remember my first league meeting where I didn’t know anybody and how great it was to see those guys kind of take me under their wing and have those guys kind of teach you some of the things and what you can expect. It’s great to have him back. The game is better with him back in the game. He’ll do an outstanding job and I love being around Coach Payton, always learning from him.
