Towing horses is a challenge for hard-core off-road pickups, and we wanted to see how our Ram 1500 TRX would do.
, and it proved to be the superior towing vehicle, handling a far heavier horse trailer than my own two-horse slant-load far better than its Ford and Chevrolet competitors. And having used ol' Cliff to haul half a ton of gear from Detroit to North Carolina for, I knew he was as good a workhorse as he was a race horse. I figured if any off-road pickup could handle horse towing, it'd be the TRX.
Still, I hedged my bets: My wife Robin and I decided to start out towing with the trailer empty. If running light went well, we'd load up a couple of horses and take them for a joy ride.Clifford turned in a most unusual performance. Stability was not a problem; the back end of the truck felt rock solid.
Engine braking was just fine, too. As with other 1500s I've used to tow the horses, the TRX's 8-speed automatic was great about preemptively downshifting on downgrades. However, we did notice some strange surging when we used the friction brakes. Also, while I found it easy to maintain a steady heading, Robin found the steering jerky and imprecise.
What kept us from loading the horses was vertical motion. When the rig would hit a bump, those soft, long-travel springs would bounce, and the dampers were slow to arrest that motion. It wasn't a control issue; the rear end of the truck always felt solidly planted. But the up-and-down motion was almost continuous, and we thought it would be uncomfortable for live animals, and possibly dangerous, as it would make it difficult for them to maintain their balance.
