Rain coming to Bay Area this weekend, forecasters say, but how much?

Rain and lower temperatures were also expected in Placer and El Dorado counties, where the Mosquito Fire continued to tear through parts of the Sierra Nevada.

In a statement, Cal Fire said it expected slightly cooler weather Thursday with lighter southwest winds. Those winds were expected to push out the smoke inversion and provide increasingly clear air over the Mosquito Fire area. Stronger winds were predicted for the weekend ahead of the rain.

“It’s gonna definitely be a good thing,” Cal Fire spokesman Scott McLean said. “At night, the temperatures are down to 50-60 degrees and the winds are non-existent, which slows the progress. The humidity is up, and now we have that storm coming in this weekend.” The storm’s path over the fire is difficult to project, McLean said, and he said rain also will present a hazard to some of the heavier equipment at the center of the fight. That said, it will be quite welcomed.While the rain certainly doesn’t hurt, it won’t mark the end of fire season in Northern California.

Weather expert Daniel Swain, a climate scientist, said on social media that any rain will not end the fire season in California, because vegetation is “literally drier than it has ever been at this time of year going into this, and hot/dry/windy weather will likely follow.” Definitely looks like a one-and-done event, w/offshore winds & another heatwave returning immediately thereafter.
