Vanity Fair’s editor in chief introduces the April cover star, and reflects on the life and legacy of Alexey Navalny.
As a politician and opposition leader, Navalny was by default also a reporter: His operation regularly published stories and videos exposing corruption and wrongdoing. Navalny knew the power of words and images to counter an official narrative. I had some experience with this 12 years ago, when I was working as an editor at Time magazine and we named Navalny to our annual list of the 100 most influential people.
Navalny had been arrested during those protests, in December 2011, and he was back in prison in May 2012, following Putin’s election to the presidency. Those were the first of many stints in prisons he would endure.
