Quentin Tarantino reveals his favorite suspenseful scene from his entire filmography which includes Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, and Inglourious Basterds.
Quentin Tarantino reveals his favorite suspenseful scene in his entire oeuvre is from Inglourious Basterds. Since 1992, the acclaimed auteur has written and directed nine movies – Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill, Death Proof, Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained, The Hateful Eight, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood – with a tenth and final film titled The Movie Critic on the way.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT During a recent interview with El País promoting his new book Cinema Speculation, Tarantino was asked what his "favorite tense moment" from his filmography is. The director unequivocally answered the opening scene of Inglourious Basterds. He also spoke about his process for creating tension in scenes.
In my movies? The one from the farm at the beginning of Inglourious Basterds. With the Nazi officer Hans Landa talking to the owner of the farm, who is hiding Jews in his cellar... I don’t know how to explain it. I have a talent for it. It’s easy for me to create those situations where the characters start talking and things fall into place and there’s a climax. You throw a ball to the actors and they catch it.
Inglourious Basterds' Opening Scene Is A Masterclass In Suspense The opening scene of Inglourious Basterds is a perfect introduction to the incomparably eloquent yet ruthless SS officer Hans Landa as he questions a French dairy farmer, Monsieur LaPadite , regarding the whereabouts of a Jewish family, the Dreyfuses. About halfway through the tense 19-minute scene, it is revealed that the Dreyfuses are hiding beneath the very floorboards on which they sit.
By showing the Jewish family beneath the floorboards, Tarantino ratchets up the suspense exponentially and stretches it out for long as possible. Landa asks for another glass of milk and goes on a long tangent comparing German soldiers and Jews to hawks and rats. It is soon revealed that Landa is aware of the family hiding beneath the floorboards, and orders his soldiers to tear up the wooden floor with machine gun fire.
