for many years before I discovered queer meetings, when I finally did, they were a game changer for me.
Queer AA isn’t an official, sanctioned-by-the-program group. It’s a community of queer people in AA who are working to create a recovery program and community where being queer or gender nonconforming isn’t just one aspect of who you are, but is considered an essential aspect of your experience, both in and out of meetings. “Queerness and transness are very interconnected with my alcoholism—both in active alcoholism, and in my sobriety,” explains A.S.
My experience of non-queer AA was that many aspects of the program were steeped in normative ways of understanding relationships, romance, and sex and left little room for the ways in which my queerness impacted the way I navigated the world.
